Unwrapping Santa

When looking at the history of a figure as enduring as Santa Claus, there are bound to be astonishing discoveries and myth-busting revelations. While many members were aware of Santaโ€™s origins in St. Nicholas of Myra, learning about Santaโ€™s connection to modern advertising, especially Coca-Cola, was eye-opening for most. Ms. M. Das found the talk well-researched and enthralling. Ms. R. Ghosh wondered about Santaโ€™s variations in the southern hemisphere, where Christmas is in summerโ€”such thoughtf l suggestions from our members make these evenings collaborative and deeply engaging!

Life on the High Seas

Each Friday session is connecting with the previous ones to form a larger narrative. Following our talk on stars, galaxies, and dark matter, Capt. Rajat Marwaha discussed how sailors navigate using the sky. In another session, our members had explored how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving rapid changes in our lives. Capt. Marwaha highlighted that the merchant navy remains one of the few professions where the use of cyber-technology is minimal in day-to-day sailing. He captivated members with stories of pirates, whale sharks, and the increasing number of women officers in the merchant navy. Members listened attentively, laughed at his jokes, and were intrigued by the changing gender dynamics in shipping. They concluded with hope for continued inclusivity in the industry and wished Capt. Marwaha success in fostering this change.

Timeless Textures: Cyanotype, Batik, and Shibori in Focus

With his background in art history, photography, and science, Dr Santanu Chakraborty presented our members with a comprehensive history of cyanotype photography and the traditional printing forms of batik and shibori. Our elders were fascinated by his references to ancient cave paintings and the earliest printing methods, and how these historical influences continue to shape artistic practices today. Members travelling to Santiniketan with us in January 2025, where they will attend a workshop led by Dr Chakraborty, showed a keen interest in explored these methods further. Meanwhile, others, such as our member Ms M. Ghosh, who will not be able to travel with us, requested us to arrange such workshops in the city. We are hopeful that we can arrange such workshops in the city soon to ensure all members have the opportunity to engage with these fascinating techniques!

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS

"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham

Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poemsโ€”poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.

TOGETHERNESS AND CAMARADERIE

Storytelling and connecting are the essence of โ€˜Addaโ€™ or โ€˜Gupshuppโ€™ as we call it. For our Gupshupp Club members, it is a time of unadulterated fun when they delve into their memories of yore or are in splits over someone elseโ€™s story or talk on pre-decided topics or even sing songs. The feeling of togetherness and camaraderie is what makes them look forward to each meet.

Members have discussions on pre-decided topics, chosen by all participants, the previous week.
