PAST EVENTS

Colours of Tradition: The Many Shades of Holi
Our Friday Evening Specials continue to captivate our members. ‘I always wait for our weekly Friday programme,’ says Ms. K. Basu. ‘Last Friday’s programme was a step beyond.’ This session explored the origins of Holi and took members on a vibrant journey across India, showcasing how different regions celebrate the festival in unique ways. From the Lathmar Holi of Uttar Pradesh to Shantiniketan’s Basanta Utsav, from the flower-splashed festival of Vrindavan to the procession-led celebrations in South India, the variations were as diverse as the country itself. The evening offered a fascinating glimpse into the kaleidoscopic traditions of Holi, leaving members with a deeper appreciation for the festival’s cultural richness and symbolic significance.

Real to Real - Arjun Sen and I Want to Talk
Few stories are as inspiring as Mr. Arjun Sen’s. A cancer survivor of nearly 30 years with over 20 surgeries, his journey is now the subject of the globally acclaimed film I Want to Talk, directed by Shoojit Sircar and starring Abhishek Bachchan. In his conversation with our members, he spoke about the power of appreciation—for life and those around us—calling it the greatest gift we can give. He urged us at Support Elders to continue our services and, recalling on his gratitude toward the medical fraternity, encouraged our members to express their appreciation regularly. We are fortunate to have members who never miss an opportunity to thank us, and it was heartening to hear Mr. Sen emphasise the importance of this exchange. We hope he continues to foster cycles of trust, faith, and gratitude—just as he did between us and our members.

Music of the Tawaifs and Devadasis
The second session in our two-part focus on the Devadasis featured an enriching talk by Mr. Rantideb Maitra, a music connoisseur and collector of rare gramophone records. He traced the history of the tradition and highlighted artists such as Miss Veena Dhanam, Miss Indubala, and Mehbubjan of Sholapur. Alongside fascinating anecdotes, we had the pleasure of listening to recordings by these maestros, all dating back to the first quarter of the twentieth century—what a treat! These rare gems sparked a wave of curiosity among our members. Their insightful questions reflected not just enthusiasm but a keen, discerning ear—many were already well-informed. It was an evening of music, history, and discovery, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for these lost melodies and the artists who shaped them.

Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poems—poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years.
