PAST EVENTS

A Look Back: A Rendezvous with Raga Todi
Sometimes we revisit popular Friday Specials from the past. In this recording from 2021, Ms Priyanka Mitra, a disciple of Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty, presented a well-known bandish in Raga Todi. She was followed by three singers who performed popular songs based on the raga. The event left our members refreshed, with many requesting more such Friday sessions showcasing other ragas and their popular renditions.

Jana Gana Mana: The History of India’s National Anthem
For our members—some of whom had witnessed the fervour of our country’s first few Independence Day celebrations, and others who still recall the end of British rule—the session on the history of “Jana Gana Mana” evoked deep feelings of patriotism. Ms R. Ghosh, Ms J. Chakrabarti, and Ms B. Chaterji fondly reminisced about Monimela gatherings from their youth. Ms Ghosh even remembered learning to sing all five verses of the original song at those gatherings. While some members reflected on certain brash forms of nationalism seen today, all agreed that it remains vital to embrace change while continuing to show respect for our national symbols.

SE Radio: Songs of Freedom (Independence Day)
To celebrate our country’s 79th Independence Day, we curated two Friday Specials—the first being a vibrant SE Radio event. Patriotic songs, requested by our members and played for our members, filled the air with pride and emotion. As always with SE Radio, the turnout was heartening, and the music sparked cherished memories of our freedom fighters’ sacrifices.
As Ms K Basu shared, “The songs gave one goosebumps.” It was an evening of unity, remembrance, and gratitude. Until next time, we wish everyone a joyful and proud Independence Day!

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poems—poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.
