The Truth about Fake News
In today’s world of misinformation and deliberate attempts by malicious entities to dress up vague opinions and incorrect facts as news, this session proved to be a much-needed tonic for our members. Times of India journalist Mr Kenneth Mohanty joined us to discuss the challenges plaguing the news fraternity and the plight of the confused reader. “We must share news—whether on social media, WhatsApp, or any other platform—with a sense of responsibility,” Mr Mohanty urged. “No listener here today is a victim. We must see ourselves as more than just readers. When we share a piece of news, we become publishers. So, we must cross-check and verify everything before passing it on.” Mr Mohanty’s call to arms resonated strongly with our members. Ms K Guha, a concerned consumer of news online, echoed the sentiment: “Yes! You’ve hit the nail on the head. This is the only way to stop the miscreants!”

Vipassana: A Brief Introduction
Some of our most invigorating sessions are the Specials hosted by our members. Ms Anjana Chattopadhyay, a long-time member, has been a Vipassana meditator for 15 years and is also a Children’s Course Teacher. She introduced Vipassana to fellow members and conducted two 10-minute sessions to give everyone a taste of the technique. Several members—including Ms S. Chattopadhyay, Ms A. Bysack, Mr M. Deb, and Mr B. Guha—enjoyed trying it out and requested an in-person session in the future. Ms M. Ghosh, who had practised Vipassana earlier, was especially grateful for the reminder: “The session returned to me the discipline I had ‘lost’, and, in doing so, brought me back to life! Thank you.”

Charlie Chaplin and Hunger
Many of our members grew up watching the films of Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. This talk offered fresh insights into Chaplin’s iconic character, the Tramp, and his relationship with hunger. We explored Chaplin’s early life and the abject poverty from which he rose to become a global cultural icon. Classics such as The Gold Rush, Modern Times, and The Great Dictator were discussed—much to everyone’s delight—as we took a nostalgic trip down memory lane, recalling Sunday morning screenings on Doordarshan in the early days of television. Ms M. Mitter, a regular, said, “Thank you for introducing us to a new way of looking at Chaplin. I had no idea…”

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poems—poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.
