PAST EVENTS
Fooling Around the World
Our Friday Evening Specials are often filled with stories and anecdotes about holidays and celebrations. But on April Fools’ Day, while we shared stories about the history of the occasion, our members chimed in with amusing anecdotes of pranks they—or someone they knew—had played on unsuspecting victims. Ms R Mitra recalled one such incident, where an uncle went in cahoots with a famous Kolkata eatery to prepare a neem ice-cream and duped his guests on Fools’ Day. He later, of course, treated them to the real thing. It was a delightful evening of shared laughter—for once, not at someone else’s expense.
The Spirit of Eid
When festivals pass us by, it is easy to focus on the celebration and overlook the history and culture that shape them. To mark the occasion of Eid, we organised a talk that took us back to the roots of Islamic culture and the significance of the festival.
We also recently transitioned to a new video communication platform, and for this session, our team reached out to each member individually to ensure they could join. A regular participant, Ms K Guha, said, “Excellent interaction. So happy to be able to tune in via the new link.”
Springtime in Bengali Literature
Spring, with its promise of renewal and quiet beauty, found a fitting celebration in our latest Friday Evening Special. Nine of our members came together to read excerpts on the season from the works of celebrated Bengali writers such as Rabindranath Tagore, Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, and Bibhutibhushan Bandopadhyay. By the end, the evening had gently ushered in the spirit of spring, leaving everyone refreshed at the end of a literary journey.

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poems—poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.

For our Gupshupp Club members, it is a time of unadulterated fun when they delve into their memories of yore or are in splits over someone else’s story or talk on pre-decided topics or even sing songs. The feeling of togetherness and camaraderie is what makes them look forward to each meet.
