PAST EVENTS
Health Session: Prostate Health
The session on prostate health saw members tuning in for an informative talk from Dr. Surajit Das of Fortis Hospital and Kidney Institute, Gariahat, Kolkata. The doctor explained symptoms, addressed issues, and dispelled myths about prostate health. Members asked questions and cleared their doubts. It was encouraging to see women attending to learn about menโs healthโthis kind of curiosity and empathy is truly inspirational. One female member even brought her brother for guidance. Everyone left with more awareness, both for themselves and for loved ones.
Crossword Craze
Our membersโ hobbies and interests are as diverse as they are inspiring. Support Eldersโ member Mr A. K. Dey, a crossword lover and cruciverbalist (a designer of crosswords) shared his love for the puzzle with us. The highlight was a sequence of slides displaying some of the crosswords he had prepared over the years for a number of Bengali dailies. Mr Dey mentioned in passing that he was an avid playwright and writer of short rhymes, and at everyoneโs request he read out a few funny verses, making everyone laugh. At the end of the session Ms. A. Bysack, an avid writer herself, thanked him for his time and asked him to join the SE writing workshops. Mr Dey signed off by expressing his interest. Perhaps we have another writer in our growing community of writers!
Bengali Tunes in Britain
Bengalis are one of the largest diasporas in the world today, and when they move, they take their music with them. Our members gathered to listen to Mr. Budhaditya Bhattacharyya (Dept. of Music, Durham University) speak about how the first Bengalis in Britain brought their music with them. The audience was transported back in time to eavesdrop on the musical lives of some of the early Bengali sojourners and immigrants. The presentation featured audio recordings capturing the atmosphere in Brick Lane restaurants, rare videos of workers on ships, and biographies of early Bengali socialites and sopranos. Our membersโ participation made the discussion lively and absorbing. Since Mr Bhattacharya is also a vocalist specialising in Hindustani classical music, our members requested him to sing something. The speaker regaled everyone with a Bengali khayฤl โ a perfect end to an evening dedicated to Bengalโs musical legacies.

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poemsโpoems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.
