Rabindra Jayanti LIVE
Our membersโ enthusiasm is infectious. After our Rabindra Jayanti celebrations at Tollygunge Club, we received requests from those who couldnโt participate to organise an online celebration to mark Rabindranath Tagoreโs birthday. We were more than happy to fulfil our eldersโ wishes. We arranged a Friday session that came alive with poetry and song, all performed by our evergreen members. A special treat was a play presented by members of our Poets and Literature Club. The evening rejuvenated us, and it felt as though we had discovered Gurudev anew.

AI for Good: Can Tech Save the Planet
Amidst widespread fears that Artificial Intelligence will take over the world and render human resources obsolete, a group of researchers is quietly harnessing AI for good. Ando Shah, a PhD student at UC Berkeley and former researcher at Microsoftโs AI for Good Lab, spoke to us about how AI is being used to combat climate change. Our members were eager to hear about the situation closer to home, and Ando shed light on Bengalโspecifically, the depletion of mangroves in the Sundarbans and the condition of the stateโs rivers. Ms Reba Mukherjee was especially thankful to learn about AIโs role in ecological activism: โWe donโt have much technical knowledge, let alone about AI. It was enlightening to understand how AI is helping in the fight against climate change.โ

Rwanda: Living with the Past
This was a session steeped in history. Members received an insightful overview of Rwandan politics leading up to the 1994 genocide. Our guest speaker, Mr Ankur Gupta, shared vivid observations of post-genocide Rwandan society, based on his stay there between 2015 and 2017. Everyone lauded the remarkable steps the country has taken to heal from its deep wounds. The conversation naturally extended to Indian history and the wounds closer to homeโof Partition and Empireโmaking the session not just informative, but truly stimulating. Our member Ms A. Chattopadhyay was full of praise and thanked us, saying: “Such a wonderful session, we covered so much history in just one hour!”

Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poemsโpoems that they had thought had lost their value over the years.
