PAST EVENTS
Welcoming the New Year Together
The new year, as is celebrated on the 15th of April in many Indian states, is always a special occasion for us. It is an opportunity to come together, celebrate, and renew our sense of community. These sessions not only allow us to share our love for literature but also strengthen the bonds that connect us. Our members marked the day with songs, poetry recitations, and prose readings. As each performance added to the warmth of the evening, we felt yet again that there is no greater celebration than to listen to one another and share the things we truly love.
Well-Being in the Later Years
Several members tuned in for our session with Mr Mohit Ranadip, psychological counsellor and social worker, who spoke about mental well-being and self-care for elders. He addressed common concerns such as forgetfulness, loneliness, and insomnia, and suggested practical ways to manage these challenges and lead a healthier, happier life. As emphasised by the World Health Organization, promoting good mental health practices and preventive strategies among elders is essential. Sessions like these are designed not only to inform but also to serve as gentle reminders for those who regularly participate in our well-being programmes.
Fooling Around the World
Our Friday Evening Specials are often filled with stories and anecdotes about holidays and celebrations. But on April Fools’ Day, while we shared stories about the history of the occasion, our members chimed in with amusing anecdotes of pranks they—or someone they knew—had played on unsuspecting victims. Ms R Mitra recalled one such incident, where an uncle went in cahoots with a famous Kolkata eatery to prepare a neem ice-cream and duped his guests on Fools’ Day. He later, of course, treated them to the real thing. It was a delightful evening of shared laughter—for once, not at someone else’s expense.

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poems—poems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.

Storytelling and connecting are the essence of ‘Adda’ or ‘Gupshupp’ as we call it. For our Gupshupp Club members, it is a time of unadulterated fun when they delve into their memories of yore or are in splits over someone else’s story or talk on pre-decided topics or even sing songs. The feeling of togetherness and camaraderie is what makes them look forward to each meet.
