PAST EVENTS
Netajiโs Legacy in Pictures: A Tribute
It was a Friday of remembrance as we gathered to pay tribute to one of Bengalโs, and Indiaโs, greatest heroes, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, on his 118th birth anniversary. Our member Mr. S. Roychowdhury volunteered to curate a talk for the evening. He prepared a pictorial biography with rare and unseen photographs of the beloved leader, Accompanying the photos was an informative commentary which helped contextualise the images within the national history. Mr Roychowdhuryโs reverence was infectious, instilling us with pride and joy as we remembered Netaji, his sacrifices, and the values he stood for.
Balletโs Historical Odyssey from Court to Stage
From the courts of Louis XIV to the stages of Russia, and from the ballet dancers in Degasโ paintings to the meetings between Anna Pavlova and Uday Shankar in the 1920s,
Ms. Sara Ezzell, a professional ballet dancer, took our members on an enthralling journey through the history of this graceful art form. Her stories and anecdotes captivated everyone. Members such as Ms. K. Basu, Ms. M. Ghosh, and Mr. D. Gupta, who have previously attended ballet performances, contributed to more nuanced discussions. While Ms. Ezzellโs talk was universally appreciated, the loudest applause was reserved for the video clips of her performances. Ms. Ezzell expressed her desire to visit Kolkata and won our membersโ hearts by signing off with a warm “dhonyobaad”!
A Visit to Israel
Writing travelogues is truly an art form, and our member Prof. R. Ghoshโs account of her journey through Israel was as evocative as it was journalistic. We could almost taste the salty air near the Dead Sea, wander through the narrow lanes of Jaffa, and explore the museums she stumbled upon. Her narration transported us not only to another land but also through time, as she led us along the stony path of the Via
Dolorosa and showcased Masadaโs rugged beauty. Once her talk concluded, the other members were unanimous in their praise. Mr. M. Bhattacharya lauded Prof. Ghosh for her adventurous spirit, saying: “Everyone visits the USA and the UK, but few go off the beaten path. Thank you for sharing such a lovely story.”

"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poemsโpoems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.
