Our member Ms S. Sil had visited London in the year 2022. Her experience of the Bengali culture and Durga Puja celebration left her feeling nostalgic. She speaks of the different places she visited in London and especially the Durga Puja.
Ms S. Sil had gone to London in the month of August 2022.There she visited most of the places like Queen Elizabeth palace, London eye, Thames River, London bridges etc. But one of the stories she wanted to share with us was the Durga Puja celebrated in London by the Bengali cultural society, Reading. Reading is the UK registered charity, established in 1982 by the local community.
At Swanley town hall, St Maryโ€™s Road, Reading, Durga Puja was celebrated for five-days as celebrated in Kolkata. That year the celebration was for four-days as Saptami and Ashtami had fallen on the same day. During the day everyone participated in the Puja and in the evening they all enjoyed the cultural programs. On each day from Shasthi to Bijoya Dashami different kinds of programs like antakshari, dandiya etc. were held where majority of the people could participate.
In the day time after the Puja people used to sit around for adda and then relish the bhog comprising ๐˜ฌ๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ช, ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ซ๐˜ข, ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ, ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜บ and ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ. Food and handicraft stalls were also put up for people to have a great time relishing authentic Bengali flavour of all kinds. On these days people were found in traditional attires like saree, designer kutas and dhuti-punjabis.
I was extremely happy to be able to participate in Durga Puja even while staying in London.

Celebration of a 300 years old Durga puja

Our member Mr A. Roy was in the Police Force. He hails from a family in Pathai gram who had started with one of the Durga pujas there. He shares the story of their historical Durga Puja which is over 300 years old.
My ancestral house is in Pathai village, Birbhum district, a mile away, towards the west of Gadhadharpur station. From ancient times all descendants of our family have been worshipping Goddess Durga in our village and the same tradition has prevailed till date. This Durga Puja was started by our family โ€“ The Roy family and is nearly 300 years old. This puja had started much before the East India Company started ruling India.
Two well known Puja takes place in Pathai gram one is ours the Royโ€™s and the other is the Mukherjeeโ€™s. Mr. Kharaj Mukherjee, a member of the Mukherjee family is a well-known face in Bengali cinema.
Every year no matter where the members of the Roy family are, on ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช of Durga puja everyone reaches Pathai gram where still our original two-storeyed house exists. We also have a ๐˜ฑ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข house constructed but the original one still exists. Those brothers of mine who had stayed back in those villages, made all the necessary arrangements for the puja. Since I am the eldest in the family, so everyone waits for my arrival.
It starts with ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ด๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ on ๐˜š๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช. On ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฑ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช the entire village comes to have ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜จ at our house which is definitely vegetarian. On ๐˜ˆ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช also it is the same. On ๐˜•๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ช along with ๐˜ฌ๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ช ๐˜ฑ๐˜ถ๐˜ซ๐˜ข, till date we sacrifice goats. It might sound brutal but this is still in practice. On Dashami at the end of all rituals, everyone sends off goddess Durgaโ€™s idol for immersion and wait for the next year for the arrival of Durga puja.
The essence of this celebration has remained unchanged. It stands as a testament to the unwavering devotion of generations, weaving the threads of history into the fabric of modern times. This ancient 300-year-old Durga Puja continues to be a timeless beacon of unity and devotion, connecting the past, present, and future in a harmonious celebration of culture and spirituality.
