PAST EVENTS
Bijoya Sammelani 1 and 2 โ 25 October & 1 November 2024
Our members came together to celebrate a virtual Bijoya Sammelani across two gatherings on 25 October and 1 November 2024. Enthusiasm ran high as members eagerly shared songs and poems, spanning from Rabindranath Tagoreโs works to modern Bengali classics. Over 100 participants tuned in, listening, encouraging, and contributing to an atmosphere of camaraderie and artistic energy. These two days of music and verse brought warmth and festive cheer to all. Our members’ admirable
spirit of participation keeps inspiring us to foster such heartfelt connections again and again.
Durgotsav: Historical Festivities
During the Durga pujas, every neighbourhood in Kolkata transforms into a wonderland. This has catapulted the annual event into the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. On 18 October we watched a presentation on the historical pujas of early Bengali societies and Bengalโs ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ช houses and ๐ณ๐ข๐ซ๐ฃ๐ข๐ณ๐ช๐ด, the royal residences. Our members soaked up stories of devotion, heritage, and community, as these historic homes of Bengal offered a glimpse into their timeless Durga puja celebrations. Mr K. Basu saw the evening as informative and educational: โI learned so many new things. What a wonderful presentation.โ The session left all inspired by Bengalโs rich cultural legacy.
Proactive Living: Understanding Non-Communicable Diseases
Ms. Manjusha Chatterjee, Director of Global Patient Advocacy at AstraZeneca, joined us to raise awareness about the often-overlooked issue of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. She addressed topics such as tobacco use and laws, and emphasized the importance of mental and physical health, genetic counseling, and regular check-ups. During the interaction, Mr. N. Ray circled back to the discussion on mental health, and Wg Cdr B. Guha suggested that more time was needed to explore the subject thoroughly. Recalling earlier talks on mental health, everyone agreed that it was time for another session.

NURTURING AND SHARING THE JOY POETRY BRINGS
"The crown of literature is poetry" - W. Somerset Maugham
Our poetry-loving members meet every week to enjoy the beauty of the verse. While some enjoy reciting poems by well-known poets, there are others who pen poems and are thrilled to dig out their long-lost poemsโpoems that they had thought had lost their value over the years. But we know that good poetry is perennial.
