Cadillac, Humber, Celebrities and I – Mr. D. K. Banerjee

There was a time when even celebrities walked on streets, parks and public places and mingled with ordinary citizens. I remember the Indian Railways celebrating its centenary in 1953. There was a large exhibition of the past and modern coaches, locomotives and other rolling stock in Delhi. I visited the fair with my father and was lucky to get a close glimpse of several dignitaries including Prince Faisal (later King) moving in the exhibition in a Cadillac convertible. Another memory has stayed with me. A walk along the bank of the Ambazari water reservoir in Nagpur, where I spent my childhood was always a pleasure. For relatives visiting from Kolkata it was a must visit to the cool and calm vista. There we would see the Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Sitharamaiya, taking the evening constitutional without anyone guarding access. I distinctly remember him reciprocating our namaskar and greetings after and getting on to the black Humber with the Raj Bhavan insignia, driving off.
